Poplar Veneer

Poplar Veneer

In this article, you can read about what poplar plywood is, its common applications, and why we have chosen it for our children’s furniture.

What is Poplar Plywood?

Poplar Plywood is a large-format panel material created by bonding together thin sheets of wood, which are known as veneers or plies. These veneers are produced by peeling logs with specific characteristics using specialized machinery. The panel is constructed by layering these plies on top of each other, with the grain of each ply running perpendicular to the next. They are always assembled in an odd number of layers (a minimum of three) and bonded together in a press.

Plywood is classified according to the wood species used in its production. These types include: marine beech, poplar, exotic, marine pine, and marine birch. Compared to other engineered wood panels, its appearance is more natural.

What are the properties of Beech Plywood?

What is the difference between MDF and Plywood?

MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is produced by breaking down wood into fibers, mixing them with an adhesive, and pressing them into a panel. Due to the gaps between the fibers, if liquid penetrates the surface of MDF or Particleboard (Sunta), it will act like a sponge, causing the panel to swell and weaken. For this reason, even with good care, it can typically be used for 5-6 years before the material begins to deteriorate.

Plywood, on the other hand, is bonded with WBP (Water Boil Proof) water-resistant glue, which prevents liquid from penetrating between the layers. Its layered edges are very aesthetic and are often intentionally left exposed as a design feature. MDF, however, tends to wear out from the edges first, so its edges must be sealed or banded.

Products made from plywood can be used for 20-30 years, or even longer.

Where is Plywood Used?

Plywood is used in many fields, including:

In the Construction Industry:

  • Concrete formwork

  • Scaffolding platforms

  • Interior partitions and roof sheathing

  • The flooring and parquet industry

In Furniture Production:

  • Doors, shelves, wooden chairs, and tables

  • Office furniture

  • Sofa and armchair frames

In Other Applications:

  • Transportation and shipbuilding

  • Packaging (crates and boxes)

  • Toys and musical instruments

  • Traffic signs, billboards, and urban furniture

  • Garden sheds and climbing walls

  • Construction of stands, stages, and performance sets

  • Kitchen countertops and backsplashes

  • Textile machinery tables and cutting surfaces

Why We Chose It for Children’s Furniture

This material became the ideal choice for us due to its ease of workability, its excellent dimensional stability (resistance to shrinking and swelling), its strength, its lightweight properties, and its aesthetic appeal.

Considering that children can be rough with their furniture, plywood is an excellent choice that ensures durability and allows for many years of use. Furthermore, thanks to the water-based paints and varnishes we use, the plywood can be sanded down and refinished—allowing for color changes over time, just like solid wood.
