We define a pallet as the wooden platform placed underneath goods within the logistics chain. Its purpose is to protect products from damage during shipping and storage and to make them easier to move and handle.
Pallets are the equipment used to ensure the right material is ready at the right time, in the right place, in the right quantity, and at the right cost. They are utilized at nearly every stage of the transportation chain.
Pallets do not perform the transport themselves; they are used as a medium for transportation. Loads prepared for shipment are consolidated on a pallet, which creates a single unit load ready for handling. Pallets have standard dimensions, with a height of 10-15 cm. The gaps between the pallet deck boards are typically 10 cm, allowing the forks of a forklift to enter and lift the load.
A forklift is the vehicle used to move pallets. In addition to forklifts, pallets can also be moved using a pallet jack (transpalet).
The importance of pallets—which facilitate the storage, handling, and shipping of goods—is steadily increasing in the material handling equipment sector. Pallets, which vary according to their structure and type, are generally made of wood, steel, or plastic. Wooden pallets are often more practical and have a longer lifespan because they can be repaired.
Pallets are categorized as either two-way or four-way entry:
Two-Way Entry: This design allows the forks of a forklift or pallet jack to enter from two opposite sides.
